Family Energy Night Project

On Thursday, February 13, The NEED Team from Tichenor M.S. in Erlanger, KY was awarded the Jefferson Award for outstanding public service. The Jefferson Awards were founded in 1972 by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Senator Robert Taft, Jr. and Sam Beard. The Jefferson Awards are a prestigious recognition system whose mission is to encourage and honor individuals for their achievements and contributions through public and community service.

In an effort to highlight students that are making a positive impact in their communities and the world at large, Children, Inc.'s Mayerson Service Learning Initiative honors exceptional service learning projects each month.

Tichenor M.S. NEED Energy Club members felt that there was a need to educate their family and community about ways to save the planet so it can be enjoyed by future generations. The Club members partnered with Kentucky NEED to host a Family Energy Night at Tichenor Middle School. The Club applied for and received a mini-grant from Kentucky NEED to educate the public through energy games and five energy stations. At one station, the students used a model of an outlet and switch to demonstrate how to install sealers. Another station compared an LED bulb to an incandescent bulb. They showed how to use a hot water gauge. Every family member that attended the event was able to request their own Duke Energy Efficiency Kit, provided as part of Kentucky NEED's partnership with Duke Energy.

Word has spread about Tichenor's Energy Wise Club and they have been invited to present their energy efficiency demonstrations for the public at the Boone County Library in March.
Congratulations to Mrs. Jennifer Davis, long-time NEED teacher and sponsor of the Tichenor M.S. Energy Club, AND her students for a job well done!
