The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Development's Bureau of Energy and Recycling has developed a new integrated approach to once separate energy and recycling education programs. New efforts in education will now fall under one program – the Illinois Sustainable Education Project (ISTEP).
This new integrated approach will focus on renewable energy, energy efficiency and the process of recycling as key learning examples of resource conservation and environmental stewardship. The program will continue to emphasize the link between energy, recycling, the economy, and the environment to provide Illinois students and teachers with the necessary information to make informed decisions.
ISTEP offers educational resources, including hands-on inquiry kits, bookmarks, and posters. Through partnerships with NEED, the Great Lakes Council of Governors’ Ethanol Coalition, the National Biodiesel Board, Illinois Ag in the Classroom, and BP, educators can receive new solar, ethanol, and biodiesel curricula. Illinois teachers attending the biofuels workshops receive NEED’s Science of Energy Kits, Energy Infobooks, and Transportation Fuels curriculum, including Biodiesel and Ethanol.
NEED works with the energy industry to provide solar panels and resources to schools as part of the BP Solar Connection program. New offerings include NEED’s H2 Educate and Energy Management for Schools programs.

Sponsors: Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity; Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation; BP; Great Lakes Council of Governors’ Ethanol Coalition, and National Biodiesel Board

Energy education opportunities have grown substantially this year in Indiana, thanks to the support of Duke Energy Indiana and the Indiana Office of Energy and Defense Development. NEED Energy Workshops were held just for teachers throughout thestate, with a special emphasis on energy management at home and at school. Energy conservation was also the focus of a two-day conference for school building operators, providing them with information and training to implement energy saving practices into their schools—to save energy and money for their schools and districts. With help from Kentucky, NEED developed a student Home Energy Conservation Kit that expands energy savings from schools into students’ homes. The sponsoring utility companies are providing interested teachers with energy management kits for their classrooms and home energy management kits for each student. With utility and state government support, the Indiana Community Action Association provided sponsorships for Indiana teachers to attend NEED Energy Conferences for Educators in 2005 and 2006, impacting classrooms and homes throughout the state.

Sponsors: Indiana Department of Commerce - Energy Policy Division; Indiana Division of Family and Children - Housing and Community Services; Indiana Community Action Association; Indiana Family and Social Services Administration, Duke Energy Indiana.
