In 2008, up to forty schools will receive the donation and free installation of a new 1 kilowatt photovoltaic system that converts sunlight into electric power. Included in the package is an online monitoring tool that provides real-time data on the system’s activity and the amount of electricity generated.

These schools will also receive the specialized curriculum package funded through the program, and are eligible to receive a “Bright Ideas” grant as well. Schools that are selected for a PV system will be invited to participate in a PG&E sponsored teacher training workshop.

The Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) will coordinate the selection and installation process for these projects. In addition to FEE, the Project Selection Team is made up of representatives from The NEED Project and PG&E.

Selection/Eligibility Criteria
Any K-12 public school within the PG&E service territory, which is currently getting its electricity from PG&E, is eligible to apply. Eligible schools with in underserved communities shall receive first priority in the selection process.

In 2008, up to forty (40) PV systems will be awarded to schools that meet all eligibility requirements and commit to an outreach effort to educate both students and the community as a whole about the applications and benefits of solar energy. In addition, each school must also meet physical site requirements as determined by the Foundation for Environmental Education.

Who is Eligible to Apply?
All public K-12 schools currently getting their electricity from PG&E are eligible to apply. Interested schools must complete the application and submit it to Glen Kizer of the Foundation for Environmental Education. Please read this entire application packet carefully to ensure that you fully understand the obligations of your school should it be chosen to participate.

The following criteria will be given priority in the selection process:

1. Schools in underserved communities, as determined by the percentage of free meals provided by the school or by such other evidence that the schools submit with their applications.

2. Schools that are located in smaller or rural “hard to reach” communities with limited access to solar photovoltaic systems to date.

3. Schools located in areas that contribute to the geographic diversity of our projects throughout the PG&E service territory.

4. Schools with a sustained commitment to teaching energy and environmental principles.

Each school that applies for a PV system will receive a thorough review of its application. Schools selected to participate will be notified by a representative of Pacific Gas and Electric Company when the evaluation team has conducted a complete review of the application and determined that all criteria are met. Schools that are not selected for a PV system will be invited to participate in a PG&E sponsored teacher training workshop. Schools that are not selected will be eligible to reapply during future rounds of this program.
