The Ohio Energy Project (OEP) experienced another successful year implementing innovative methods to provide energy education and leadership opportunities to Ohio’s students and teachers. Incorporating NEED curriculum and materials, OEP focused on three primary goals for the 2014-15 school year:
•    Engaging student programs
•    Award winning energy efficiency programs
•    Excellence in professional development

Student Programs:

OEP conducted Youth Leadership Summits, Energy Workshops/Fairs across Ohio to educate teachers and students about the science of energy and energy-related issues. Over 650 seventh-twelfth graders were trained at Youth Leadership Summits implementing NEED’s “Kids Teaching Kids” philosophy.  These student leaders facilitated hands-on explorations and carnival games for over 3,100 elementary students at Energy Workshops/Fairs.

Energy Efficiency:

OEP’s Energy Efficiency Education Program empowered students and teachers to conserve energy at home using energy efficiency kits, resulting in a significant energy savings across the state. This program has been extremely successful and 43,000 students received energy efficiency kits this year.  “Kids Teaching Families” takes leadership to a new level, allowing students to impact their families with energy efficient choices.   Additionally, OEP distributed over 4,500 CFL’s to Ohio students.

Professional Development:

OEP believes that Ohio educators are our greatest resource and strives to provide excellent professional development opportunities.  New in 2014-15, grade level specific workshops for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade empowered educators with curriculum and teaching kits to meet Ohio’s New Learning Standards.  The Energy Sources Tour continues to be a popular event.  Through partnerships with Ohio energy businesses and university research facilities, teachers get to see behind-the-scenes at energy sites and learn directly from energy industry professionals.

Teachers can access NEED curriculum online. As resources are available, teacher workshops and hands-on kits are available. Individual state curriculum correlations are available here.
