2020 NEED Year in Review

COMING SOON IN 2021...

HOME

So, what will 2021 have in store for NEED’s teachers, students and partners?

We are hopeful that the pandemic and the impact it has had on education will subside and classrooms can again be places filled with hands-on learning and social interaction. We are working now on plans for our return to in person programming with social distancing, management of hands-on supplies, and more. We also learned that the virtual environment opens up many opportunities and we plan to work with partners to support several virtual workshops a year to reach teachers and students who can’t join us in person. There will be new curriculum coming, including an expansion to our Hydropower curriculum and training with support from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Water Power Technologies Office. The expanded curriculum and training include new additions to the secondary curriculum, plus a new career and technical education unit and one for the emerging workforce too.

NREL and the U.S. Department of the Interior Bureau of Ocean Energy Management

Also with NREL and the U.S. Department of the Interior Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, NEED heads offshore to design curriculum related to floating offshore wind production. Along with NEED’s current offshore oil, gas, and wind units, this new curriculum will help students, teachers, and the general public understand the innovation needed to bring floating offshore wind to our outer continental shelf.

We will also have new training offerings for teachers and students

Including new workshops for California teachers supported by the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD). There are new mentorship opportunities for college students with the ComEd Scholars Mentorship Program and for high school girls with the Exelon STEM Leadership Academy.

We know that 2021 will have its challenges...

Thanks to the support and feedback from our teachers, students, sponsors, and partners, we know it will be energizing, engaging, and fun!
