2023 - 2024 NEED Resource Catalog

NEED updates most of its curriculum each year to reflect the most current, available energy data and technologies on all topics. We invite you to visit our “New with NEED” curriculum section.

Ocean Energy

Ocean energy refers to all forms of renewable energy derived from the ocean. NEED’s newest Ocean Energy curriculum includes informational text, hands-on explorations, and critical thinking and engineering design activities to introduce students to wave, tidal and ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC).  Just released, Your Future in Marine Hydrokinetics provides Career and Technology Education activities that provide hands on experience with electricity, magnetism, and generating electricity from marine environments. Exploring Marine Hydrokinetics features hands-on and critical thinking activities that help secondary students to explore the science, technology, and engineering involved with harnessing energy from the movement of water in the world’s oceans. NEED curriculum is available for free PDF download or viewable as an e-publication and these guides include a Teacher Guide and a Student Guide.

A big thank you to National Renewable Energy Laboratory and the U.S. Department of Energy Water Power Technologies Office for their support!

Offshore Wind Energy

Dominion Energy Wind for Students

This curriculum was developed by The NEED Project in partnership with The Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation for teachers in Virginia. The activities and information introduce students to wind, wind generation, and offshore wind technologies, as well as the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind Project. You may download the curriculum guides as a free PDF, as well as Floating Offshore Wind Posters here!

Dominion Energy, in partnership with the National Energy Education Development (NEED) Project, is bringing wind energy to two educational institutions in Hampton Roads. Ocean View Elementary School in Norfolk and New Horizons Regional Education Center’s Newport Academy in Newport News are the first two schools selected as part of the new Wind for Students Program.
